| Morocco: Blogger Sentenced to 6 months in Jail |

Moroccan blogger Boubaker Al Yadib was sentenced to 6 months in jail and 500 dhs fine, by a Court in southern Morocco city of Guelmim. Mr. Al Yadib was arrested last January 26. The trial of blogger was held January 28. And according to his lawyer, Mr. Darchil Ahmed, Al Yadib was sentenced for participating in an illegal demonstration, “attacking public officials”, defacing public property and inciting a protest against government policy towards the Amazigh” An arrest warrant had been issued against the blogger last December, after he had covered in his blog, a demonstration in the city of TAGHJIJT (200 km south of Agadir). Mr. Al Yadib reported that "it all started with a simple peaceful demonstration on 1 December 2009 by students of TAGHJIJT … in order to claim their social rights and legitimate cultural rights…. the Authority's response was a disproportionate use of force ". The Reporters-Without-Borders ONG has characterized the court decision as an "unjust condemnation," and a "blow to freedom of expression in Morocco," and adds "the reasons for his arrest and conviction are related the blogger’s” writing on the internet. The Organization listed the cases of Mohammed Erraji Hassan Barhoum, or Al Bashir Hazzam, recent victims of a "campaign of repression launched by Moroccan authorities against bloggers and human rights activists" Reporters-Without-Borders said on its website. Moreover, Reporters-Without-Borders called for the "immediate release of the blogger, meanwhile, Mr. Al Yadib’s lawyer said that he would appeal the court decision.

... Before 9/11 western countries used to condemn repressive governments and defended freedom of expression. We no longer see these countries standing up against injustice. I won't be surprised if it is some sort of master plan by western coutries to encourage repression because when they defended freedom, they received Islamic fundamentalists winning every election they entered. Last visit Hillary Clinton pay to Morocco , he praise was very unusual. When the US and others congratulates Bouteflika on amending the constitution to be president for life, there is no doubt in mind that the western world thinks that freedom is only deserved by their own people. |
