Morocco: Islamists Failing as an Alternative

By the time massive protests erupted against some Arab dictators, we all know that they were all goners, one way or another. The only way they could have kept their grip on power would have been to slaughter their own people in the streets (as the Syrian dictator is doing now). But it is far from clear that their armies would have been willing to fire on their own people.
And as the examples of Syria and Libya demonstrate, even a willingness to slaughter without mercy is no longer a guarantee of a dictator’s staying power. Moreover, if Mubarak, Ben Ali or Abdallah Salah had opened fire to stay in power, it is hard to imagine the U.S. remaining allied to them afterward. By carrying out a bloodbath, those dictators would have sacrificed whatever scraps of legitimacy they had left, at home or abroad.
So Obama was not wrong to finally withdraw U.S. support from those dictators. Nor was his action necessarily decisive. Obama was merely acknowledging the inevitable. The real mistake was made earlier—by a long line of presidents, from Reagan to Obama, who countenanced those Arab dictators’ rule for so long.
Some of us had been arguing for years that it was a mistake to give them a blank check thinking that those dictators cooperation was essential to fight al-Qaeda and fostering the Israeli-Palestinian “peace process.”
Unfortunately, that policy backfired: It made a revolution, rather a gradual devolution of power, more likely—and when the revolution came it made it more likely that power would be seized by Islamists because the mosque was the only place where any independent political organizing could occur.
To see how things might have worked out differently, look at Morocco. King Mohammed VI has forged a new constitution that allows the largest party in parliament to form a government while keeping for himself control of national security and religious affairs. In Morocco, as in Egypt or Tunisia, Islamist party has emerged as the winner of a recent election. . Morocco’s Islamists, organized in the Justice and Development Party, claim to be moderate, pretend that they are primarily focusing on fighting corruption and expanding services such as health care and schooling, not on banning alcohol or repressing women. It's been almost a year now and no effective political or economic agenda has been implemented. All PJD ministers excel in rhetoric speeches but no action so far. Many observers have started wondering about this and have started questioning the Moroccan Islamists capabilities to elaborate a coherent (doable) social, economic government platform to help the country to get out of the current crisis or at least a road map that can assure the Moroccans of the seriousness and capabilities of the current government. So far the Islamist- led government introduced flashes in the pan either inside the Parliament or in their press meetings. Their campaign to ¨reform Moroccan television is merely an attempt to islamize many of the TV shows and they made that as the top priority of their agenda. Moroccans have started to lose patience with this government and their inability to fulfill many of the promises they have made during the last legislative elections. The Moroccan youth, as the rest of the Arab youth, have started to think that the Arab Spring is a misnomer. The Islamists either in Tunisia, Morocco or Egypt have surfed over the Arab Spring wave and they are likely to dominate Arab politics for generation. The Arab youth rose up for the sake of democracy, rule of law, social justice, employment opportunities and freedom of expression and not for strict implementation of sharia.

Those who'll do anything to keep the status quo, meaning they prefer to keep the makhzen owning the apprehend on the masses just like the author, and those who who think that Islam/Islamists are the saviors.
They are both frightening and dangerous. I don't know who's worse.
I abhor both.
Yup! a second Arab Spring is badly needed.
the current islamists are more servile than previous ones, look benkirane said in public that if you stole public money just stop doing it now and you are OK.
this is not the type of reforms people had in mind.
it is simply another trick in a long list of tricks the makhzen is playing on everyone.
remember they wanted to pass the new constitution overnight no matter what.
remember the commission presented the new constitution and was changed in the dark of night.
it looks like they will need another constitution in six months time
Everyone knows that there is no lost love between Benkirane and El himma but when El himma has the backing of the king, Benkirane should just pack up and move to his favorite mosque instead of trying to do his job as the prime minister.
M6 hates islamists, as the " commander of the faithful" he is not willing to share that title with no one.
The author is talking about the plight of the Moroccan youth but he will not mention that this youth that he is speaking of, do not want kings and Fassi fihris.
He reminds me the not so famous Mustapha al Alaoui of Radio Television Marocaine. Blame others but never the real culprits. Such a shame!
" In Morocco, the king is the head of state and ... the head of the council of ministers, in which I am the head of the government. He is therefore my boss"
Unless we have people rising to the challenge of being govern honestly, we will have the king and his merrymen ruining the country.
In Morocco, the King is still the number one banker in chief, Real estate developer in-chief, Insurer in-chief, Miner in-chief, whatever you can think of in-chief, and of course King of the poor.
Even if you put Obama as prime minister and the whole Whitehouse staff governing morocco the makhzen will still make them fail..
interview of Benkirane,he did well in France

The new Wahabi/Ikhwan parigidim will end within 5 years I predict when the followers either burnout or become suicide bombers in Syria or Faluja (or even Europe. The supporters of Ikhwan or the supporters of USAmerican free market neo-liberalism can scream all they want here and mock our king BUT alhumdulilah he has provided stability here. The next thing he (the King h.A.) must due is only allow Asharis that follow 1 of 4 madhabs to teach in the Dar al-Qur'an and he must make the books of Ibn Taymiah,Muhamma d Abdel Wahab and Sayid Qutub illegal here and jail those that promote it.
Fiamanillah,
The Ashari
We elect Ali El Hima? is that what you are advocating??! Said my friend...I am starting to wonder whether the "old gov" ppl are "happy" about your articles. Well let me tell you... you have chosen the wrong place. Moroccan Americans are the best of the bunch, VERY educated, and cannot be easily fooled. Everyone knows that there is very little that a new gov can do in a span of less than 12 months especially when they have a gazillions people out there trying to "deer lihoum laasa fi rwayida" like you are doing by writing this meaningless article. Come on brother... give them some time... At least give them time to finish their stupid 5 years in power and then lets talk... In the meantime you can call your friends at "al asala ou lmouaasara" and tell them the days of their flawed agenda are over!!! PJD and the King are now close friends and have the blessing of the Moroccan people and that is the future of Morocco...so there!...
You are absolutely right ont the money, I don't know the author . Even Lematin and Map don't treat their readers as bunch of naive illiterates.
telling us that the KING is the geniuos and Benkirane is the devil. He finds excuses for M6 whose ruling Morocco with iron fist for 12 years and blame Benkirane who has zero power and admit that the M6 is THE BOSS.
Moroccan Americans are passed Hassan II and Lbasri era.
I don't understand why you have such an animosity towards the King ?? He is been very active an has been implementing a lots of projects ..... I mean what more do people want from him, that he does your job for you ? Come on you can't be serious.
