Western Sahara Separatists and Terrorism In The Sahel

Washington / Morocco News  Board--The Western Sahara Separatist Polisario Front's “unilateral” decision to evacuate all foreign aid workers from its Tindouf refugee camps, is yet another indicator of the volatility of the security situation in the Sahara. The Algerian backed separatist guerilla movement is headquartered in Southwest Algeria where hundreds of Polisario fighters are stationed.  Recent press reports indicate that dozens of former Polisario fighters who fled the refugee camps to join terrorist camps in Northern Mali have returned to Tindouf since the beginning of French military operations in Mali.

The Algerian pronouncement (The Algerian government make the final security decisions relating to the Tindouf camps) to remove all foreign nationals form Tindouf comes on the heels of the In Amenas terror attack in the south of the country and few months after the kidnapping from the Polisario camps of three Europeans by a Mali based terror group.

Most of the evacuees were Spanish citizens whose government issued a travel warning for Algeria. Revelations of the identity of the In Amenas attack organizer have alarmed Moroccan, Algerian and western security Agencies. Terror leader Mohamed-Lamine Bouchneb is a member of an influencial family with deep roots in the Algerian Sahara. He created the “Organization of Sons of Sahara for Islamic justice”, a group of smugglers that operated in southeastern Algeria for years.

Bouchneb maintained good relations with some members of the Polisario Front. As such, he may have played a role in recruiting young Sahrawis from the Tindouf camps for armed operations in the Sahara and the Sahel.

The Bouchneb Polisario links had no bearing on the In Amenas attack, nevertheless, such associations indicate further breach of the security and intelligence apparatus of the Polisario Front by Sahel based Terror group.

The continuing threat posed by terrorism and violence in the Algerian Sahara include the Polisario camps where morale is low and the temptation of easy money from smuggling and kidnapping has pushed guerrilla fighters to abandon their “cause” for a more lucrative business.

Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it.

As a so called expert, Mr Masikey sshould have used some reputable sources to prove his point( Map and Marrakech info dont qualify as a rep. source) and instead all what we get is more of the same cheap propaganda.

On a side note, if Polisari was connected to terrorism in The SAhel dont you think France would have said something about the matter, since they are engaged in Mali?

Algerians consider that killing 40 innocent hostages is heroic act. A' vous de juger!

ADDIS-ABABA- The response of the People’s National Army (ANP) Special Forces to the terrorist attack against Tiguentourine gas plant is a "heroic act" and reflects Algerian senior authorities’ determination to make no concession to terrorism, Minister Delegate for Maghreb and African Affairs Abdelakder Messahel declared Thursday in Addis-Ababa.

The truth is that Morocco has been saying all this time that for plenty of reasons, some of which are linked to terrorism, the Sahara should not be an independent country...

The "sahrawi republic" just provided the crushing proof of that, when they asked all foreigners to leave the camps and "liberated territories" because of the war in .... MALI, a country with no borders with said "liberated territories", if you didn't laugh... well you just missed a good opportunity...

BTW, why don't you give yourself a break, this article is not about Algeria, if you are looking for reasons to get mad, I don't think you have to look beyond the borders of your country...

Finally, sincere condolences for all those dead in IN AMENAS...

+2 #4 Terrorism using Politico-psycho in Tindouf CampProf Suresh KUmar 2013-01-25 00:41
Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has enormous stockpiles of weapons unleashed and has been a pretty good criminal organization, making money off kidnapping for ransom, protecting narco-trafficke rs and other contraband. The Polisario are worried that the second generation unemployed young Sahrawis of Tindouf Camp might turn to violence/terror because of their sheer frustration about their future. Algeria government is an authoritarian government and does not allow their people for democratic movements, peaceable assembly and other protest as it is seen in other countries like India, USA Africa or Europe. This dictator government failed to put forward any peaceful solution in the last more than twenty years and that always chose the violent/terror actions. The flow of weapons from Libya, Mali and other region and its use in Algeria is the witness of Politico-psycho violence of the youth to destabilize their existing restrictions in the Tindouf Camp exercised by the Algerian government. This youth with militant proclivities now have access to these weapons that allows them to quickly escalate their violent strategies, seen most recently with the hostage of gas plant workers in Algeria. The United Nations Secretary-Gener al's Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross on the issue warned and said, “Amid the rising threat of extremist elements in Africa's Sahel region, the dispute over Western Sahara must be resolved before lingering hostilities consume the North African territory. It is further said the current status quo is threatened by developments in West Africa's Sahel region, which has seen the growing presence of Islamist extremists and militants, including a branch of Al Qaida. The radical Islamists in Mali seized control of the north, where they have imposed an extremist version of Muslim Sharia law and stringent rules targeting women. The instability and insecurity resulting from renewed clashes in Mali, as well as the proliferation of armed groups in the region, drought and political instability has sparked fears among many in the international community that the Sahel as a whole is on the brink of destabilization ”. Today, the Tindouf Camp of Algeria has produced a pool of trained youth fighters with no social security. Al Qaida ideology of terrorism has good time using the Politico-psycho of this educated youth and attracting them by luring easy dollar money and weapon as part of employment. Christopher Ross further remarked, “I'm not saying the Sahrawi people or the Polisario people are terrorists but with thousands of well-trained fighters and young men with little economic prospects, it's a potential recruiting source for al-Qaida, drug traffickers or other negative actors”. The same concern is realized by the African scholars and is worried about the peaceful solution of the problem. Peter Pham, director of the Africa Center at the Atlantic Council, “The lack of a resolution to the situation in Western Sahara, after more than three decades, has created a pool of trained fighters in the Tindouf camps of Algeria with nothing to do”. It will become fertilized ground for the Al Qaida and a base to attack on the neighbouring countries and Europe.
There is a need to engage this politico-psycho Polisario youth in real dialogue and compromise to find a solution and establish confidence-buil ding measures to seek a peaceful solution to the situation failing which Algeria and other will be the sufferer of this international terrorism.

But how do the Moroccan people view the Polisario Front and their military capabilities? Are their fighters actually 'well trained' and funded enough to appeal to Moroccans?
