The Secret of The Poor’s Success
JAMAL ELABIAD

tweeter rss

Poverty is a key factor of success. I came to this idea shortly after reading on the web a moving short story whose protagonist reminded me of the story of a student called Salma, and of all the poor around the world who managed to turn their poverty into success. It is undoubtedly difficult, yet it is not impossible.
Salma was one of my brilliant and well-mannered students. Never before had she been absent or even late. Salma, more importantly, was the kind of students who are so curious to know that their teachers are strongly advised to be well-prepared. If you were/are a teacher, you will surely know what I am talking about!
I therefore was stunned to find out Salma did not attend school for nearly a week, and that her absence seemed normal for some teachers. She may be ill or something of this sort, I thought.
One day, I happened to meet Salma’s father when I was on the way home from work.
“What’s the matter with your daughter, Salma?” I asked.
“You must be a new teacher here. Your colleagues at school already knew young girl-students are usually forced to leave school and marry due to poverty,” he replied.
Salma’s father was deeply shocked to know of students who realized their dreams though they were poorer than his daughter…!
Salma got divorced two months later and would return to school the following year. I got the shocking news straight from the horse’s mouth, her father. He also told me it was Salma who wanted a divorce. He did not know why!
Salma is currently studying at high school. The last time we met, she told me she obtained the first mark at school. After congratulating her, I asked, “Is it true that poverty is the secret of the poor’s success?”
“For sure, teacher,” replied Salma.
